What is expected of an eight to twelve-month-old child?

At eight to twelve months old, a child is typically developing motor skills and might begin to walk. This period is critical for physical development as infants gain strength and coordination. Many infants start pulling themselves up to standing and may take their first steps during this stage. Walking usually occurs anywhere from about 10 to 15 months, but before this milestone, a child may work towards it, showing signs of readiness such as cruising along furniture or standing alone briefly.

In contrast, an infant at this age is not yet able to read simple words, write their name, or play complex games. Reading and writing skills are far beyond the developmental capabilities of an eight to twelve-month-old, as these skills typically emerge much later in childhood. Additionally, while infants may engage in simple play, complex games require higher cognitive functions and motor skills that are not typically developed until they are older. Thus, the ability to walk is a more realistic expectation during this crucial growth phase.
